NAB had closed the inquiry of LNG contract case and the decision was taken during a regional board meeting held on December 19, 2016.

In 2018, the Accountability Bureau had initiated an inquiry against former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi over alleged misuse of authority.

Abbasi and some others had been accused of illegally awarding LNG terminal contract for a period of 15 years to a company of their liking and inflicting billions of rupees losses to the national exchequer.

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) in its tenure from 2013-2018 completed two LNG terminals.

Earlier, the former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasihad said he is not afraid of being arrested and arrived before the NAB in the LNG contract case.

When asked if he had prepared responses to the accountability court’s questionnaire, the former premier said that government records were necessary to provide those answers.

The inquiry into the LNG contract case had been initiated almost one-and-a-half year after the NAB Karachi office closed a similar inquiry against KhaqanAbbasi for his alleged role in the import and distribution of LNG.

The DG NAB had suggested before the regional board to close the inquiry. After exhaustive discussions, the board meeting had decided it was an ongoing project.

In between investigation, Khaqan Abbasi had said that the Inter-State Gas Systems (ISGS) was tasked with facilitating the re-gasification of Pakistan’s first LNG terminal, which was done in a record time of fewer than 11 months.

    Conclusion:

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has have been arrested in a case involving a multibillion-rupee liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract to Qatar. He is remanded in the custody of NAB for 13 days.

Abbasi has been arrested in the alleged misappropriation of funds in the import of LNG that caused a loss of about $2 billion to the national exchequer. Further, he is being investigated for allegedly granting a 15-year contract for an LNG terminal to a favored company.

The case is now at the evidence-collection stage. NAB will file a reference in the court if it finds irrefutable corruption evidence against Abbasi during the investigation.
