Dr Soumya Swaminathan, director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and secretary to the department of health research, has been appointed the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) deputy directorgeneral, programmes, in Geneva. This is the second-highest position at the UN agency.
