The World Bank has released a new survey report on Pakistan’s energy needs.

According to the report, Pakistan will have to get at least 30% of its electricity from solar and wind by 2030. Alternative energy will not only help reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions, but will cost Pakistan  5 billion over the next 20 years.

 

“Alternative energy will bring immediate and long-term economic and environmental benefits, and we look forward to helping Pakistan achieve affordable and reliable electricity by 2030,” said the World Bank Country Director.

The World Bank says that Pakistan needs to consider a more long-term policy for energy and to significantly reduce power generation from domestic and imported coal, Pakistan needs to avoid repeating the cycle of load shedding which Therefore, the process of investing in alternative energy projects and transmission systems should begin immediately.

 

Dr. Khawaja Rafat Hassan, Managing Director, National Transmission and Dispatch Company, said that Pakistan could reap the benefits of greater reliance on local solar and wind resources.
