According to media reports, in a press conference with Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz in Islamabad, Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Babar Awan said that the Senate elections should be held through open ballot and to give overseas Pakistanis the right to become members of Parliament. Dr. Babar Awan, Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs, while addressing a press conference, while referring to the Electoral Reforms Constitutional Amendment Bill, said that the word “open vote” has been used instead of single vote in the first part of the bill.

Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Babar Awan said that after the amendment, those who have dual citizenship will be able to contest elections but after winning the election, they will have to give up this second citizenship before taking oath, otherwise they will not be sworn in.

“Whether we have more or less seats in the Senate elections, the elections should be transparent,” the parliamentary affairs adviser said. Those who take covert action will not support the constitutional amendment and those who have no fear of anyone or are loyal to the party will definitely support the constitutional amendment.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Senator Shibli Faraz said that the PTI is convinced that the Senate elections should be transparent, no matter what the cost. Elections are in the wider national interest.

“We expelled 20 members of the provincial assembly from the party in the last election on suspicion of voting incorrectly,” he said. The opposition is expected to play its part in ensuring transparent Senate elections under the Charter of Democracy.
