Teacher – A write-up by Zainab Khan.
I hate it when they do this to me. it’s really annoying . I get in all prepped up to tell them if they do it again,I’m not gonna take it anymore. They can’t takeme for granted. Yes . surely they can’t. I step in, start with my planning and at the end ofthe period, leave the room filled with smiles and some faces I’d never forget.
****************************
What ? What are you staring at ?
Are you angry ?
No. Just focus on what I’m trying to teach right now.
No. You’re angry right? We’re sorry. We’ll really not do this again. Cmon guys promise now that you’re not gonna make noise or disturb the class. Now could you please be like you are?
Arghhhhhhh I said I’m fine. Just focus on your studies now.
Thereyou go now. Puppy eyes. And then of course I have to smile. I can’t stop doimg that . ughh I hate myself.
Yayyy we loveyou! You’re the best. And you know what?
What ? I say smiling .
You look great when you make faces.
Shutuppppp ! I try to act serious once more.
And then there’s a roar of laughter again of the rowdiest class ever.
*****************************
What happened?
He pushed me.
No he pushed me.
No he did !
OK ok let’s just stop here. What the real thing we wanna talk about right now.
Nothing. They say simultaneously.
Okayyy. Then let’s begin with the class.
No.
Why ?
Because I need to tell you something.
(There it comesagain! )
Hmm. We’ll fix it in the last five minutes. Okay ?
Okay.
Cmon now back to your places and let’s begin with the planning.
…last five minutes and there’s a lot to hear and two babies which were actually trying to act grown up open up in front of me and there are tears, stories, counselling and a pat on their shoulder. In the end, its only smiles and a bigger place in our hearts occupied by each other.
****************************
Could you people just stay quite for a while!
And then there’s laughter again. Yes, the never ending one.
Fine. I’m done. No more teaching. Have fun. I’ll have fun too.
See? We knew you were bored too, someone from the corner says. And then there’s that laughter once more. Butthis time its me who’s the one laughing the most. And then instead of stories from them,my planning goes smoothly…surprisingly.
******************************
There’s a student giving out his speech after taking the oath for prefect body and I’m bored like I am in formal meetings always. And then I hear my name.
Wait …
What ?
My name ? Out of so many teachers he said a big thank you to me? For what ? I look at him and he’s smiling and nodded as if assuring yes it’s you.
Thanks for being a wonderful teacher.
A smile and tears, and a feeling of being asuper hero.
*****************************
Yes. You can take me for granted. ButI won’t stop loving you. Because if I do, I know I would not have made a difference in not only yours, but my life either.
I have memories which always make me feel special.
I know faces who loved me for who I am .
I have people in my life who said I made a difference in their life.
I know children who knew when I was hurt when adults refused to do so.
I… Have the honour of being a teacher.
I love you all out there who made it awonderful experiencefor me.
